More About the AA
The AA, or Automobile Association, was founded in 1905 to help improve conditions on the roads for a small but growing group of drivers. From small beginnings, just 100 members in 1905, they grew to 83,000 members by 1914. As the AA membership grew so did the services they offered. They started by erecting signs by the roadside to warn of danger and continue today to promote road safety. Today the distinctive black and yellow AA signs are still used to alert drivers to special events.
As touring by car became more and more popular, the AA started to appoint agents and repairers across the UK to help with the vehicle breakdowns. They also started inspecting hotels, giving them AA stars based on their levels of comfort and amenities. Together with restaurant reviews the AA published a number of guidebooks which remain popular even today.
By the late 30s, over 2 million cars were on the UK roads and AA membership levels had reached 725,000. Over the years the AA have lobbied for a number of motoring issues including the lifting of petrol rationing after the Second World War, the compulsory wearing of seat belts, the introduction of lead free petrol, unfair taxes on motorists and number of other campaigns aimed at improving motoring conditions.
Today, the AA has the largest breakdown service in the UK, and they continue to expand their breakdown services and their other financial products.
